(integration of special needs children)

The family policy adopted by the Quebec government advocates accessibility of services for all children, whatever their condition or particular reality may be. Relative to this, handicapped children, children presenting behaviour disorders, and children of single-parent families or those with low income require a very special attention when one takes into account their needs and the interventions adapted to their situation. To integrate a special needs child into a daycare service is to include him in society. Our centre wishes to therefore play an active role in this regard insofar as the available resources are sufficient to adequately meet the needs of the child.
Currently, the services of a psycho educator who works directly with the child in his group, the educator who is responsible for him, and with the parent, is provided for, seven hours a week, in CPE Jardin de Fruits’ “daycare centre”. The CPE can also count on the contribution of interveners from other organizations (CLSC…), following already tested mechanisms of collaboration, thus allowing for support of initiated integration.

Contribution of the psycho educator

The intervener assigned to the post of psycho educator in the daycare centre has to achieve several significant tasks inside her mandate. Among them, some directly involve special needs children :

:: support to educators who receive special needs children
:: detection and prevention
:: awareness and education (organizing information meetings with specialists)
:: creation and application of intervention plans
:: individualized follow-ups (sometimes with the CLSC and other community organizations)
:: support and follow-up with the parents
:: training, information and referral of parents
:: creation of or research of pedagogical material or intervention strategies as needed
:: early stimulation activities
:: animation of specific workshops (the « Pacific Path Program »)
:: support for underprivileged families in immediate need
